Rev. Gary E. Mathiesen retired on October 1, 2017 after serving at Shepherd of the Hill for 26 years. Rev. Heather James will be serving as our transitional pastor as we seek a new installed pastor.
Rev. Heather James, Transitional Pastor
Rev. Heather James is an ordained pastor in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), and has served several congregations in the Puget Sound region.
She is deeply committed to encouraging people as they answer God’s call to worship and serve together. She is passionate in the belief that Christ has established the church for a significant purpose in the world – that the world would know the love of God through the love expressed by God’s people in worship, fellowship, service, and mission.
Heather has served in full time pastoral ministry for more than 20 years, and remembers God’s call to church leadership as early as her young teen years when she led a bible study for second graders. This call took root and has grown through God’s faithfulness and leading in many different seasons of life ~ a music degree at Grinnell College, pastoral training from Fuller Theological Seminary, serving in parish ministry, and spending time overseas as a missionary in Asia. One of Heather’s deep joys in ministry is leading God’s people in worship through Biblical reflection, prayer, and music. She speaks with the ability to balance the message of God’s love for us with our call to share that love with others.
Heather also has training and experience in children’s, youth, adult ministries, and church re-development. She completed her Clinical Pastoral Education through the chaplaincy program at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle, WA.
Heather lives with her daughter in an old farm house in Tacoma, WA. On her days off you can find her biking, hiking, or kayaking in our beautiful northwest region. She also loves quilting, good coffee shops, and is an avid reader.
She is excited about joining Shepherd of the Hill’s congregation during this transitional season, and hopes to serve our community with enthusiasm, joy, and love.
Erin has been the choir director at Shepherd of the Hill Presbyterian Church since January of 2013. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Pacific Lutheran University and completed her Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance at Arizona State University. She is a seasoned soloist, recitalist and chorister, singing professionally with music organizations locally and nationally. She is an active voice teacher in the area, instructing at Pierce College in Puyallup. She and her family are members of the church, and love living in the Pacific Northwest where they enjoy the outdoors and spending time with friends and family.
