Freezing Nights works with local churches to provide food and shelter to the homeless in Puyallup during the winter months (November 1-March 31). The guests meet at a pickup location in downtown Puyallup where they are then transported to the hosting church. When they arrive they find their personal bag and a cot, are served dinner, and then settle in for the night. Volunteers make lunches for the guests and serve breakfast the next morning.
This year, Shepherd of the Hill will have the honor of being the first church to host our homeless neighbors on Saturday, November 1. We will then be hosting every-other Saturday through March 2015.
We need volunteers from SOTH for several different positions. We need people to set up the sleeping and dining spaces for the evening; provide and serve a hot dinner; spend time in fellowship with our guests in the evening; stay overnight in shifts; provide a hot breakfast and pack lunches; and clean up the building on Sunday morning. On the first hosting night, we will need several extra volunteers to help our guests with filling out paperwork. Please consider giving a couple of hours that evening.
For those wanting to help us throughout the season, (volunteers must fill out paperwork and undergo a background check before working in the program) there will be volunteer training at several local churches:
Friday, October 3: 6-9pm, Celebration Center, 13603 86th Ave E
Saturday, October 11: 9am-12noon, Shepherd of the Hill, 8401 112th St E
Saturday, October 18: 9am – 12noon, Puyallup Nazarene, 1026 7th Ave SW
If you have any questions about the program at SOTH, please contact Kim R.
